When the time came to install lighting along the walkway outside its gymnasium, the Illinois Institute of Technology had already made significant strides toward reducing carbon emissions. In fact, the Institute’s gym was a net-zero building, with much of its power being generated by the solar panels covering its roof. The school was proud of its efforts. But there was a problem: nobody knew the school was “going green” since the panels were hidden. So when the school sought an exterior lighting provider, they discovered that Aris Wind’s Smart Pole offered the perfect solution: an off-grid streetlight powered entirely by renewable sources, and, with its eye-catching wind turbine and solar panel, was visibly “green energy.” Now the school is not only protecting the environment with its renewable exterior lighting, but it’s also getting noticed for it. The IIT installation was seen by ComED, the Chicago electric utility, which then purchased 5 Smart Poles and donated them to Chicago Public Schools. (The installation at IIT was documented in an industry whitepaper, and the ComED installation is described in papers in our Press section.)

Case Study:
Hendrick Hudson School District
The facilities team at Hendrick Hudson School District faced a problem common to many schools. The security lighting in the front area of the building, which included a drop-off/turnaround and several rows of parking spaces, was insufficient. However, there was no existing underground wiring that would allow them to simply add more grid-tied lights. So, hoping to avoid the time and expense involved in trenching, diverting cars, and running wires, the team decided to do what some other nearby schools were doing: turn to Aris Wind’s off-grid solution. Aris installed six Smart Poles in the grassy island of the turnaround/parking area, solving the lighting problem. Meanwhile, no underground wiring was needed, no parking had to be diverted, and the lights were up and running quickly. Moreover, the school will be using the wind/solar data to teach its students about renewable energy.

Case Study:
Jacobi Medical Center
Based on the success of the Kings County Hospital project, Aris Wind was asked to do another installation at a second NYC Health & Hospital Corporation site: Jacobi Medical Center. This job would include 22 units, representing our biggest installation to date. The Smart Poles at JMC include customized banners that mark the hospital’s different centers and capabilities. They’ve become a highly visible part of the campus and have garnered favorable attention from hospital visitors and the media. (See Press section for examples.)

City of New London
What does a municipality do when its picturesque, waterfront park is suffering from neglect and littering? Security lighting is one solution. But what if the park has no existing underground electrical infrastructure? This was the dilemma facing the Public Works team at the City of New London. Luckily, they discovered an off-grid solution: Aris Wind’s wind/solar powered Smart pole streetlight. The team decided to install three Smart Poles along an area of waterfront that the City is renovating. As an amenity to the citizens, they asked Aris to include USB phone charging stations on the poles for any park-goers who needed to charge their phones while relaxing at the waterfront. The team also asked Aris to include wraparound tables on the poles so park-goers could enjoy a beverage while waiting for their phones to charge.

SUSTAINABILITY
The Smart Pole is powered entirely by wind and solar energy, emitting zero carbon emissions, protecting the the environment and the health of all citizens.
RESILIENCY
Off-grid powered. When the grid goes down, the Smart Pole stays up.
GREEN MESSAGING
Provides a highly visible means for the end user to project its sustainability messaging to the community.
AUXILIARY POWER
The Smart Pole produces more power than is necessary for lighting, which allows the unit to use that power in other ways: Self-Powered Internet, STEM for schools, USB Charging.
